GILLES PERESS

Born in France in 1946, Gilles Peress studied at the Institut D'Etudes Politiques and the Universite de Vincennes. He began working as a photographer in 1970, embarking on an intimate portrayal of life in a French coal mining village as it emerged from the ashes of a debilitating labor dispute.

After joining Magnum Photos, Peress traveled to Northern Ireland to begin an ongoing 20-year project about the Irish civil rights struggle. "POWER IN THE BLOOD", a book which synthesizes his years of work in Northern Ireland, will be published in 1995. This work is the first part of his ongoing project called "HATE THY BROTHER", a cycle of documentary stories that describe intolerance and the reemergence of nationalism in post-war Europe. "FAREWELL TO BOSNIA" is the second part of this series.

Gilless currently lives in New York City and welcomes your comments.
