Picture Projects
was founded in 1995 by Alison Cornyn
and Sue Johnson to create
documentaries using new media technologies. The team has collaborated
with noted photographers, journalists, filmmakers and academicians
to tackle major contemporary social concerns. Cornyn and Johnson
met at New York University's Interactive
Telecommunications Program. Their first project on the web,
with Gilles Peress - Farewell to Bosnia - was created with Chris
Vail, also at ITP, and launched in early 1995. The impetus for
the project was to bring attention to the war in Bosnia and to
use the web as a venue to present photographs that no U.S. editors
would publish. The site was awarded the Milia New Talant Award
and was linked to by CNN. From that project on, the team has experimented
with the web as
a space for presenting alternative points of view and complex
and in-depth perspectives. Participatory storytelling is at the
heart of much of the studio's work.
Picture Projects began in Cornyn's East Village apartment where
the team worked until it became a hub of 24-hour-a-day activity
and subsequently moved to a studio space in Chelsea. For the past
three years, the studio has been housed in a loft space in Little
Italy/Chinatown. In the ten years since its inception, Picture
Projects has grown to become an award winning production company
with a wonderful, talented and dedicated staff.
